Description | : | Statue to late Montreal Mayor Jean Drapeau. The bronze statue is at Place Dauversière, next to Place Jacques-Cartier. City hall (Hotel de Ville ) is in the background.
Drapeau will forever be known for his 1973 statement: "The Olympics can no more have a deficit than a man can have a baby." The cost of the 1976 Olympics, to which he was referring, ballooned from an original estimate of $310 million to more than $1.5 billion. The Olympic Stadium (nicknamed "The Big Owe") was to have cost $200 million, but ended up with a $1 billion pricetag. Montreals would pay for the Olympics into the next century.
