| Description | : | Barbados was said to have been named by 16th-century Portuguese explorers, who referred to it as Los Barbudos - "the bearded ones." It is generally believed this is a reference to the Bearded Fig tree (Ficus citrifolia), although some believe it might have been a reference to Africans who were already on the island.
