Description | : | Detail from Chamberlain Bridge, Bridgetown. The bridge was named in honor of British Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain as a symbol of gratitude to the British government for helping the island after an 1898 hurricane, which also destroyed the existing bridge. In years past, the bridge would swing to the side to allow boats to pass through to the Careenage. Due to mechanical problems, however, the bridge swings no more.
