“Welcome to Scotland — in July. This morning it was hot and muggy outside Dumfries. But as the Scots say, wait five minutes and the weather will change. So, this afternoon in Glasgow, we’re in a torrential downpour. The rail lines on the lower level of Glasgow’s Central Station are under water. The result? A chaotic mass of rush-hour passengers seeking alternate routes out of the city. We pick our way through the pelting rain, and some puddles you could sail a boat on, to Glasgow’s other train station. Our intent is to get a quicker service train to Edinburgh and on to our base in Kirkcaldy. But welcome to Scotland — in July. Train service has been suspended due to severe flooding and bus service is as slow as — in my opinion — an Englishman buying a round of drinks. Maybe this was revenge of sorts by the Black Douglases, whose area Tania and I had visited earlier, for some transgression committed by one of my ancestors. But then again, it’s Scotland — in July.”
